Children have been learning to use algorithms with digital devices. The children have been using the Code a pillar programmable toy and are beginning to transfer these skills to the iPad where they can work through coding activities within fun games.
We have carried out an experiment this morning. We used diet cola and mentos to create a volcanic eruption. We carried out 4 different experiments using different amounts of mentos (we doubled 2,3,4&5) to see which amount created the largest eruption. After we had a discussion about what would of happened to the dinosaurs when the hot lava hit them.
This half term the focus is on understanding algorithms and using them with various devices. The children have explored algorithms in practical ways such as drawing a crazy character then designing an algorithm for it. This week the children have used apps and bee bots to develop their skills further including debugging.
You will never guess what happened in Reception today... a dinosaur egg appeared! We investigated this and decided on a set of instructions that we would follow to take care of the egg. We used our Fred fingers to help us write words and we even added capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. In our writing we included words such as first, after that, next and finally. Our work was that amazing that we got a reward from Mrs Gowland. We can’t wait to take care of the dinosaur egg and to see what other unexpected things happen in Reception.
When it snows...
We were so excited when we saw the snow falling today. We went outside to explore it then we worked with our friends and talked about how environments look different in the snow. Then later on we looked at how it was different when the sun came out. We talked about melting and freezing.
